Benue State University Student To Die By Hanging For Robbery

A Makurdi High Court on Tuesday sentenced, Jacob Atongo, a 100-level sociology student, Benue State University, to death by hanging for armed robbery.

In his judgment, Justice Adam Onum, held that he was satisfied with the confession of the accused to the charges and therefore, found him guilty.

Onum sentenced the accused to death by hanging, insisting that the sentence prescribed under the law for the offence must be followed.

Atongo conspired with two others and robbed Stephen Akuma, and several others at gun point on June 26, 2012.

Suspected Boko Haram militants have killed 12 people in Nigeria’s restive northeast, burning homes and stealing cars in an area repeatedly attacked by the insurgent group, police and residents said Saturday.

The attack in the Sandiya village happened Thursday in Borno state, Boko Haram’s stronghold, but details were slow to emerge given the communication shutdown in the area.

5 Police AIGs redeployed

Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, has redeployed five assistant inspectors-general of police (AIGs) and two commissioners of police for what he called “effective crime fighting”.

Disclosing this in a statement, police spokesman, Frank Mba, stated that the officers redeployed include former Anambra Commissioner of Police, AIG Ballah M. Nasarawa, who was recently promoted Assistant Inspector-General of Police. He is now AIG in charge of Zone 9, in Umuahia, covering Abia, Imo, Enugu and Anambra state commands.
